The Art of Listening, Healing & Somatic Self-Care
Our bodies are always speaking to us. Through sensation, through tension, through the quiet whispers of discomfort and the deep sighs of relief. They hold our joys, our griefs, our unspoken stories. They move us through the world, regulate our stress, heal what has been broken, and cradle both our physical and spiritual selves.
But how often do we truly listen?
So many of us are running on autopilot—pushing through fatigue, ignoring the dull ache in our shoulders, numbing out the tightness in our chest. We override the messages our bodies send, not out of malice, but out of habit, out of survival, out of the belief that there isn’t enough time to slow down and feel.
But what if we chose another way?
What Does It Mean to Nurture Your Body?
Nurturing your body is more than eating well, more than moving your muscles, more than resting when you're tired. It is the practice of attuning to yourself—learning the language of your body, responding to its needs, and creating a sanctuary within your own skin.
For some, it looks like somatic movement—stretching, shaking, dancing, and unwinding stored tension. For others, it is breathwork, slow and intentional, releasing the tightness we have carried in our chests for too long. It can be self-massage, grounding exercises, Reiki, or deep stillness.
And for many, it is the simple, radical act of listening.
When your body aches, do you ask it why?
When your breath is shallow, do you pause to deepen it?
When your energy is heavy, do you open a window, let fresh air sweep through, and invite stagnancy to leave?
The body holds the answers, but we must be willing to hear them.
How I Practice Somatic Self-Care
I used to believe self-care was about rigid routines. A checklist. A set schedule of practices I had to follow to feel “good enough.” But I have learned to trust my body’s rhythm—to let intuition lead, rather than expectation.
Some days, self-care looks like grounding my bare feet in the earth, feeling the pulse of the land beneath me. Other days, it’s moving my body in whatever way feels good—whether that’s yoga, shaking, or simply placing a hand on my heart and breathing deeply.
There is no "right" way. The only way is the one that allows you to meet yourself where you are, again and again.
Ways to Listen & Care for Your Body
Somatic Practices for Nervous System Healing – Our nervous system holds onto old patterns, trauma responses, and stress. Somatic movement like stretching, swaying, or gently shaking your limbs can help release stored energy and bring you back to a state of regulation.
Intuitive Movement & Embodiment – Instead of forcing yourself through a strict exercise routine, allow your body to move in ways that feel nourishing. Some days, that may be a slow walk in nature; other days, it could be dancing in your living room with abandon.
Breathwork & Nervous System Regulation – The breath is one of the most powerful tools we have for self-healing. A deep, intentional inhale followed by a long exhale can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, calming anxiety and allowing you to feel more grounded.
Energy Healing & Reiki – Everything is energy. When we feel heavy, stuck, or disconnected, energy healing practices like Reiki can help clear stagnant energy and restore balance. Whether receiving Reiki from a practitioner or learning how to channel it yourself, this modality is deeply restorative.
Grounding & Sensory Awareness – Connecting with your physical environment can help regulate your nervous system. Walking barefoot on the earth, holding a warm cup of tea, or simply noticing the feeling of air on your skin brings you back to the present moment.
Mindful Touch & Self-Massage – Our bodies long to be cared for. Massaging your hands, feet, or shoulders can release tension and cultivate a deeper relationship with yourself. Even something as simple as placing a hand over your heart can create a sense of safety and connection.
Opening Windows & Clearing Space – Fresh air is one of the simplest, most overlooked ways to shift energy. Open your windows, let the wind move through your space, and allow it to carry away what feels heavy. Air circulation is not just physical—it is energetic.
Rest Without Guilt – So many of us resist rest, believing we must "earn" it. But rest is not a reward; it is a necessity. Whether that means taking a nap, going to bed earlier, or giving yourself permission to do nothing, allowing yourself to rest is a radical act of self-care.
Listening Without Judgment – Your body is always communicating with you, but are you listening with kindness? Instead of criticizing your body for feeling tired, tight, or sore, ask it what it needs. Respond with curiosity rather than frustration.
Intentional Language & Prayer – Words shape energy. The way we speak to ourselves matters. Set an intention for your day, your space, your body:
"I release what no longer serves me."
"I welcome ease and gentleness into my body."
"I trust my body’s wisdom."
Speak these words out loud. Whisper them to yourself. Let them become truth.
Your Body Is Your Guide
You do not have to earn rest. You do not have to push through. You do not have to wait for permission to feel good in your body.
Healing does not happen in the mind alone. It happens in the tissue, in the breath, in the way we move and respond to the world around us.
So today, ask yourself—What does my body need? What would it feel like to honor that?
Then, listen. And trust that whatever comes up is worthy of your care.
